Suneaters (founded in 2008) is the second generation of Los Angeles glam rock band, Dr.Doctor, which featured actor/writer/director/podcaster/fine artist, Michael McMillian on vocals and painter, Mark Silverberg on drums (Sidenote: McMillian's drawings are featured on the covers of Suneaters I and Suneaters V: Heroic Dose. McMillan also did the photography and layout for the Suneaters XI: It's The Future. Silverberg's paintings are featured on the covers of Suneaters III: Unfathomable Darkness and Suneaters IV: Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fingers).
From Dr.Doctor, lifelong friends, Chris Lost (guitar) and Scott Free (bass) recruited a troop of Kansas City artists and musicians to form the collective known as Suneaters. Soon after the 2011 release of Suneaters I, Lost and Free made a pact to release 13 albums in ascending/descending order (I, XIII, II, XII, III, XI, IV, X, V, IX, VI, VIII, VII). And when Suneaters VII is completed, they agreed the experiment would be over and Suneaters would end.
Joined over time by David Saab (drums, vocals), Chris Cardwell (drums, vocals), Michael Judd (guitar, piano, vocals), Nick Carroll (drums, guitar, vocals), and Sam Goodell (piano, organ, synthesizers), Suneaters has evolved as a band and a close group of friends.
The often-confusing eclecticism of the bands' albums is truly about how life's phases continue to pummel its members in waves. Paternal frustration, love, grief, balance, and strife ascend as cinema, dance, smog, and performance de-scend. In their defense, it's hard to pick a lane when life's linear acceleration constantly tumbles one in all directions. On the flip, it's difficult to gather a crowd when you can't stand still.
And so Suneaters is an experiment in realized unrealistic ambition. Albums, theme songs, videos, movies, national television appearances, best of lists, film festival awards, and now a double vinyl LP are all artifacts of a band that aims high while still comfortably snuggling in obscurity.
